A fully defined sketch is a 2D drawing in CAD software in which all lines, shapes, sizes, and placements are strictly restricted by measurements and geometric restrictions.

A fully defined sketch means

  • Every line
  • Every circle
  • Every arc

is completely constrained.

Sketch color: Blue = Under Defined, Black = Fully Defined, Red = Over Defined

Advantages

  • Stable model
  • Better rebuild
  • Easy editing

Why It Matters

  • Prevents unintended changes when other designers open or modify your project files.
  • Changing a dimension updates the shape predictably while not breaking or distorting other sections of the model.
